Our first micro-episode, in which Andy dadsplains the beautiful Amal Unbound to a very sleepy Samara, and the two hosts rediscover the importance of the Model UN. Listen for the discussion on indentured servitude and feudal Pakistan, or listen for the terrible pronunciations. You decide.
YA Dad & Daughter are leaving town, heading out on our first overseas family journey, but we still made time to record a micro-episode about Amal Unbound, a novel that gives a very personal account of indentured servitude and the struggle to gain an education while oppressed.
We absolutely loved the book, but we love the book's author, Aisha Saeed, even more. One the founders of We Need Diverse Books, Aisha has been striving nonstop for inclusiveness in the children's literature and YA space. Along with her co-founders and all their supporters, she's broken open the discussion of what's being published for young readers and the failures to represent overlooked and marginalized voices.
And since we can't find a book trailer for Amal Unbound, enjoy this delightful panel discussion with Aisha and some of our other favorite authors.
